About this tool

How zakat is calculated

Zakat is due on wealth that stays above the nisab threshold for one full lunar year. The nisab is commonly set at the value of 87.48 grams of gold (7.5 tola) or 612.36 grams of silver (52.5 tola). Because silver is much cheaper, the silver nisab is lower, and many scholars recommend it as it means more people give. Zakat is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth.

Opinions differ on some details, such as jewellery worn regularly, retirement funds and how to value shares. This calculator follows a widely used general approach. For your personal situation, please confirm with a qualified scholar or a trusted zakat organisation.
