About this tool

HEX, RGB and HSL explained

All three formats describe the same colour in different ways. HEX, such as #8B0000, is the compact code used most in web design and brand guidelines. RGB lists the amounts of red, green and blue from 0 to 255, and HSL describes hue, saturation and lightness, which makes it easy to create lighter or darker shades.

The palette section groups similar pixels together and shows the colours that cover most of the image. It is a quick way to build a colour scheme from a photo or to check which colours a competitor's brand uses.

Colour picking tips

Zoom in on small details

Crop or enlarge the area first if you need to pick from tiny text or thin lines.

Mind compression

JPG compression can shift colours slightly. Use a PNG screenshot for exact brand colours.

Pick from your screen

In supported browsers, use the screen picker to grab colours from anywhere.

Check contrast

When using picked colours for text, make sure there is enough contrast with the background.

Can I pick a colour from a website?

Take a screenshot and paste it here, or use the screen picker button in browsers that support it.

Why is the picked colour slightly different from the brand colour?
