About this tool

Alphabetical vs natural sorting

Plain alphabetical sorting compares text one character at a time, so "10 apples" comes before "2 apples" because 1 comes before 2. Natural sorting reads numbers as whole numbers, so 2 comes before 10, which is usually what people expect for file names, versions and invoice numbers.

Sorting also handles accented letters sensibly, so "Élan" sits next to "Elan" rather than at the end of the list. Ignoring case keeps "ali" and "Ali" together.

Sorting tips

Use natural order for numbers

Ideal for file names like "Chapter 2" and "Chapter 10".

Sort by length

Useful for spotting very short or very long entries in data.

Clean as you sort

Remove duplicates and empty lines in the same step.
